While initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the Malaria No More campaign have achieved enormous success through global collaboration, the events of the COVID-19 pandemic have shone a light on the extreme precariousness of our infrastructure, governance, and communities in times of public health emergency.

Recent research advances, particularly those in the fields of machine learning and big data, have allowed us to map and analyse disease pathways like never before. This, combined with a push towards decentralised healthcare, means the responsibility over the health and wellbeing of entire populations is shared across the public and private sector, from grassroots to global conglomerates. It will take a broad tent of actors to rise to the challenges that climate change, widening health inequalities, and the rise of antimicrobial resistance will pose in the years to come.
